In Germany and Europe, large amounts of renewable electricity are generated during the summer months, but over 8 TWh per year are curtailed due to insufficient hourly demand. Several additional terawatt-hours, which are not curtailed, are sold at uneconomical prices on the so-called spot market. At the same time, a significant energy shortfall during the winter months continues to hinder the progress of the renewable energy transition and causes strong price fluctuations—negatively impacting both households and industry.
Current storage technologies –such as batteries or compressed hydrogen– fail to address this central challenge in a safe, scalable, and cost-effective manner.
H2Season technology, based on electrochemical hydrogenation cycles in liquid organic molecules (e.g., alcohols), demonstrates promising potential as a practical and economical solution for large-scale energy storage with broad global applicability.
